Legal Operations Lead

Clera

San Francisco

About this role

ABOUT THE ROLE

Build and own the legal operating system at an early-stage AI infrastructure company. This hands-on role combines commercial contracting with workflow design, helping the business manage growing agreement volume while balancing legal risk, speed, and business needs.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Own legal workflows from intake and prioritization through approvals, escalation, document management, and outside-counsel coordination.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate commercial technology agreements, including MSAs, SOWs, data licenses, SLAs, NDAs, and vendor contracts.
  • Create and maintain contract templates and negotiation playbooks for recurring issues such as data rights and usage restrictions.
  • Identify ways to streamline or automate high-volume legal work with software and AI while preserving appropriate human judgment.
  • Set clear guidelines for internal handling, standardization, automation, and escalation to leadership or outside counsel.
  • Manage outside counsel by scoping work, controlling spend, and reserving external support for specialist or high-value matters.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • At least 5 years of experience in legal operations, contracts management, commercial operations, or transactional legal work at a fast-growing technology company.
  • A law degree, such as an LLB or equivalent, and hands-on experience with US commercial contracting conventions.
  • Strong drafting, review, and negotiation skills for commercial technology agreements, with sound judgment about when specialist advice is needed.
  • Experience with intellectual property law, contract templates, legal workflows, intake systems, document management, and approval processes.
  • Ability to use legal technology and workflow automation tools, including AI, to scale legal operations.
  • Commercial judgment, clear communication, and experience balancing legal risk with customer needs and business priorities.
  • Experience managing outside counsel and working independently in a fast-paced, early-stage environment; data licensing or other IP-intensive work is valuable.
